Blood Grouping
Blood type is genetic and determined by the presence or absence of antigens (proteins) A and/or B on the red blood cells. There is also a protein called the Rhesus Factor (Rh) factor, which is either present (+) or absent (-) on red blood cells. Humans have eight blood types: A+, A-, B+, B-, O+, O-, AB+, AB-.
Blood type is necessary to know for transfusions, pregnancies, or in case of donating blood.
Oscar’s blood group test measures the combination of A, B, and Rh antigens and specific antibodies that correspond to the eight different blood types.
It is based on the antibody-antigen binding principle. The test mixes a blood sample with antibodies against type A, type B, and Rh factor protein. If the blood cells stick together, the blood reacts with one of the antibodies and can provide a visual cue of the blood type of the sample.
