H.Pylori

H. pylori (Helicobacter pylori) are bacteria that can cause an infection in the stomach or duodenum (first part of the small intestine). It was discovered in 1982 by two Australian researchers, Barry Marshall and Robin Warren, who won the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 2005 for the discovery. H. pylori bacteria are present in some 50% to 75% of the world’s population, and can cause conditions like gastritis, ulcers, and stomach cancer and some stomach ulcers. Studies have shown the bacteria is responsible for more than 90 percent of intestinal ulcers and up to 80 percent of stomach ulcers. It’s more common in developing countries.

H. pylori is commonly transmitted person-to-person by saliva. The bacteria can also be spread by fecal contamination of food or water. Infection is most likely to occur in children who live in crowded conditions and areas with poor sanitation. In order to prevent H.Pylori, one should practice good hygiene and hand washing, especially with food preparation

Diagnosis

A laboratory test called a stool polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test can detect H. pylori infection in your stool and mutations that may be resistant to antibiotics used to treat it. Other methods include - Breath test, Upper endoscopy exam

Prognosis

Most people with H. pylori infection will never have any signs or symptoms. H. pylori infections are usually treated with at least two different antibiotics at once. This helps prevent the bacteria from developing a resistance to one particular antibiotic. Treatment may also include medications to help your stomach heal.
