Ovulation

Ovulation is the term for when a mature egg is released from the ovary. After it is released, the egg moves down the fallopian tube and stays there for 12 to 24 hours, where it can be fertilized. Hence Ovulation is a necessary step toward pregnancy. In an average 28-day menstrual cycle, ovulation typically occurs about 14 days before the start of the next menstrual period.

About

The 6 days leading up to and including ovulation make up what’s called the “fertile window.” This is the period of time when sexual intercourse may lead to pregnancy. Each person's menstrual cycle length may be different, and the time between ovulation and the start of the next menstrual period may vary.

Diagnosis

An ovulation test, also called an ovulation predictor test, OPK, or ovulation kit, is an over-the-counter test that checks your urine for luteinizing hormone (LH). When getting ready to ovulate, the body produces more luteinizing hormone (LH). By detecting a surge in LH, these tests help predict when someone will ovulate and be most fertile for conception.

Prognosis

There are over 200 million pregnancies in the world, resulting in about 140 million births each year. There are many actions expectant mothers can take to promote a healthy pregnancy and healthy start to a child's life, including taking folic acid supplements, avoiding certain substances, and preventing environmental exposures.
