An estimated 100-400 million infections occur each year, over 80% are generally mild and asymptomatic. Each year, an estimated 400 million people are infected with dengue virus, 100 million become ill with dengue, and 21,000 deaths are attributed to dengue. About

Dengue is a viral infection transmitted to humans through the bite of infected mosquitoes. There are four DENV serotypes and it is possible to be infected four times. There are vaccines available for Dengue. At present, the main method to control or prevent the transmission of dengue virus is to combat the mosquito vectors. It is advisable to use mosquito repellents, managing the environment to prevent mosquito breeding grounds, and keeping the body covered to avoid mosquito bites.

Diagnosis

Patient samples collected during the first week of illness should be tested by two main methods - Reverse transcriptase–polymerase chain reaction (RT–PCR) method and Serological methods, such as enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) to confirm the presence. The virus may also be detected by testing for a virus-produced protein, called NS1. There are commercially-produced rapid diagnostic tests available for this, and it takes only ~20 mins to determine the result

Prognosis

There is no specific treatment for dengue fever. Patients should rest, stay hydrated and seek medical advice. Depending on the clinical manifestations and other circumstances, patients may be sent home, be referred for in-hospital management, or require emergency treatment and urgent referral
