Pregnancy

There are over 200 million pregnancies in the world, resulting in about 140 million births each year. A 2020 UN report estimates that about 121 million, or about half of the pregnancies annually are unintended. Reproductive rights are human rights; everyone has the right to make informed decisions about their body and health and to decide whether, when and how many children to have (UN General Assembly, 1979).

About

A pregnancy is defined as the time between conception and birth and usually lasts 40 weeks. The most effective way to prevent pregnancy is to utilize contraception such as condoms, birth control pills, or intrauterine devices (IUDs).

Diagnosis

A pregnancy rapid test is an easy way to determine if you’re pregnant. It looks for human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), which is a chemical only found in pregnant women and it starts to build up once the fertilized egg implants in the uterus (womb) — about 10 days after conception.

Prognosis

There are over 200 million pregnancies in the world, resulting in about 140 million births each year. There are many actions expectant mothers can take to promote a healthy pregnancy and healthy start to a child's life. Of the half of unintended pregnancies, about 60% end in abortion. While maternal mortality has been trending low in the last few decades, in 2020, the global maternal mortality ratio was still 152 deaths per 100,000 live births.
